Key Features
The MK-104 has varying characteristics when placed in on-axis or off-axis configurations. In on-axis configurations, high frequencies are slightly more prominent in relation to bass frequencies. When placed in an off-axis position, the microphone allows for ambient noise and 'air' to be captured whilst simultaneously rejecting noise from adjacent sound sources. This allows the MK-104 to produce excellent transient response and bright room ambience.

The MK-104 features a newly designed, 27 mm large diaphragm capsule installed in an acoustically optimised headbasket. Extensive research has gone into creating the capsule implemented in the MK-104. The new capsule utilises a new arrangement and sizing of precision-drilled backplate holes for optimum time and frequency domain performance. The result is capable of capturing pristine, clear audio without any detrimental factors or scooped frequencies.
The research hasn’t stopped at the MK-104’s capsule. The basket surrounding the capsule utilises four acoustically optimised vents that dramatically reduce reflections within the headbasket. This provides a smooth upper midrange response and ensures every detail of transients is captured. This also allows the MK-104 to benefit from the characteristics of both small and large diaphragm microphones. Retaining the qualities of the 27mm capsule, the MK-104 is capable of accurately capturing high frequency transients with detail reminiscent of a small diaphragm mic.
Oktava have implemented their much-admired transformerless circuit from the MK-012 microphone in the MK-104. The transformerless design allows the MK-104 to deliver an uncoloured and clear sound. This also contributes to the MK-104’s extended high and low frequency response. One of the main benefits to implementing a transformerless circuit is the ability to handle much more level without distortion. This makes the MK-104 extremely versatile in its application, suited to both loud and quiet sources.
When placed in an on-axis configuration (directly facing the sound source), the MK-104 provides a smooth upward tilt from bass to treble. The result of a response with slightly more dB treble output relative to the bass frequencies is an accurate sound and excellent transient response.
In off-axis configuration, the MK-104 exhibits a unique polar response, 180-degree output above 7 kHz exceeds 90 output. This means that ambient room noise is accepted whilst simultaneously rejecting high frequency bleed from other sound sources. Thanks to this, the MK-104 excels when the user is looking for bright room ambience, while minimising high frequency leakage from adjacent instruments.
