Key Features
The Doepfer A-196 is a phase-locked loop module consisting of three sections. These are a VCO, leading into a phase comparator, leading into a low-pass filter, which leads back into the VCO. This loop is normalled, so is pre-connected without using cables.
The phase comparator section compares the VCO section with an external signal. This forms part of a feedback loop that "locks" the VCO's waveform to the external signal's waveform. The different types of comparators will perform this action in different ways, resulting in different effects - also depending on the pitch/range of the VCO.
The LPF acts a little like a slew generator. so when pitches are changed, it causes a portamento effect between them. And the VCO itself can be used as just a simple oscillator too, it uses a simple pulse wave - but is best utilised as a part of the PLL system.

The A-196 PLL is not your usual module. Its phase-locked looping opens up the potential for everything from light waveform colouration, to full-blown noisy modulation. And with three different modes to choose from, and the LPF to adjust, there's plenty of scope for adjusting the A-196 to suit your individual needs.
