The Boosey & Hawkes Emperor is a vintage British-made Bb clarinet designed for serious advancing and experienced players. Originally positioned toward the upper end of the Boosey & Hawkes clarinet range, the Emperor combines traditional construction with a broad, projecting tonal character.
The Emperor is particularly recognised for its relatively large bore, which contributes to an open playing response and a full-bodied sound. Its traditional Boehm-system keywork provides familiar fingering for orchestral, concert band, ensemble and solo applications.
Produced in England over a number of decades, the Emperor has become an appealing choice for players seeking the character of a vintage British clarinet. Individual instruments can vary in body material, key finish and other specifications depending on their production period.
As with any vintage woodwind instrument, the condition of the pads, corks, keywork and body should be considered when assessing playability. Professional servicing may be beneficial depending on the instrument's maintenance history.
